Colorado Ground-Water Association's February Monthly Meeting
Date: Wednesday, February 17, 2010
Speaker topic: Geohydrology and Hydrogeochemistry of the Cripple Creek Mining District
Presenter: Adrian Brown, P.E., Adrian Brown Consultants, Inc.
ABSTRACT
Large scale gold mining has been conducted in the Cripple Creek Mining District since the 1880s. Since early in the mining, groundwater has represented a major challenge. To address this challenge, a series of tunnels were driven into the volcanic diatreme that hosts the gold ore bodies, which lowered the regional water table and made mining feasible. The flow rate from these tunnels has in the past exceeded 20,000 gpm, and is now around 1,600 gpm. The reduction in the water table level has had hydraulic and geochemical effects, and has provided a rare opportunity to observe the quantitative behavior of a groundwater system at a regional scale.
