Harlan Erker Memorial Scholarship Program
The Colorado Ground Water Association offers up to two $1,000 Scholarships each year. The scholarship is open to graduate students and senior undergraduates (as of Fall 2009) attending an accredited college or university in Colorado.
Announcing the 2009 Scholarship Recipients
The 2009 Harlan Erker Memorial Scholarship has been awarded. Due to the increased number of highly qualified applicants, two scholarships of $1000 each were awarded this year to Kristin Mikkelson and Katherine Davila Olmo. Mikkelson is a PhD student in the Environmental Science and Engineering Department at Colorado School of Mines. She is studying the effects of deforestation due to the pine beetle epidemic on the transport of metals and other nutrients within the groundwater system.
Olmo is a Masters student in the Geosciences Department at Colorado State University. She is studying the impact of return flows from groundwater to the South Platte River by analyzing stable isotopes and other compounds at various points along the river.
Both students will be directly applying the scholarship earnings to cover the costs of sample analysis for their respective research. We will be receiving updates on their progress early next year. We will also have the opportunity to hear them present their research at a monthly meeting sometime next year so the CGWA membership can see firsthand the caliber of research and future scientists they are helping to support.
